The first few minutes were strange, Austria played almost entirely outnumbered, one minute of which was even a 3:5 defeat. Late in this phase, the Hungarians took advantage of their numerical superiority, László Farkas brought the puck into the middle and David Cernik deflected an unstoppable shot into his own goal for goalie Oschgan to make it 0-1 (6th).

Hungary came out of the locker room aggressively and was superior in the first few minutes of the second period, and the hosts were repeatedly able to establish themselves in the Austrian defensive zone. Towards the end of the middle period, the ÖEHV selection received a penalty, Hungary took advantage of the majority: Bendegúz Dobos sent in the goal to make it 2-2 (39th).
The first minutes of the final third belonged to the Austrians, who now went to work briskly and also played more precisely offensively. But the Hungarians also repeatedly set the needle. Unfortunately, Austria could not take advantage of a power play in this phase. The match increasingly became a question of nerves. Head coach Philipp Pinter’s team continued to act more aggressively and were more enthusiastic about running.

Then it was crunch time, both teams wanted the three points. When everyone in the hall was already expecting overtime, Austria struck: Gregor Biber put the puck into the top corner 49 seconds before the final siren (60th) and made it 3-2 for red-white-red. Hungary pulled the goalie and the equalizer was no longer achieved. Austria celebrated its second victory in the second World Cup game. Goalie Benedikt Oschgan was voted player of the game for Austria.
Head Coach Philipp Pinter analyzed the match shortly after the final siren: “That was a photo finish, a real fighting victory. Of course we didn’t want to start this game, we had an incredibly difficult time finding our way into the game and took stupid penalties. We got the first ones We didn’t play well in two thirds, couldn’t find a rhythm or access. But we then worked our way back through fight, team spirit and also the necessary luck. The third third was again very impressive, we played through our game and got significantly more out of the game . And of course we’re happy that we scored the winning goal so close to the end. We’re really happy about it! It wasn’t the ice hockey we were hoping for for over 40 minutes. After a rest day on Tuesday, the ÖEHV selection starts live on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m LIVE.eishockey.at – further: The opponent is Denmark, which lost against France 4:6 on the first match day and lost 2:3 in the second match against Kazakhstan after taking the lead.
