Antofagasta authorities announced actions against “this criminal act”, after contamination with sulfuric acid in the Hand of the Desert. Meanwhile, they called not to approach the place, due to the serious consequences that the substance can have on people’s health, whether due to burns or inhalation.
Authorities met this Saturday morning at a technical table of the Regional Emergency Committee, convened by Onemi Antofagasta, to define the decisions to be taken after the sulfuric acid spill in the vicinity of the Desert Hand.
It was an event recorded last Wednesday, next to the well-known sculpture located 75 km south of the regional capital.
In this regard, the regional presidential delegate of Antofagasta, Karen Behrens, He announced that the first measures taken by the authorities aim to determine the causes of what happened.
In that sense, he aimed to know “the company that would own the truck that carried out this criminal act in terms of environmental regulations.”
At the same time, he highlighted that actions were taken to address the consequences of this spill.
In that sense, he stressed that “it is very dangerous for people who could approach this place and be able to suffer damage, both by burns or by inhalation.”
“Regarding that, all measures related to the site of the event can be taken to remedy this issue and remove this material with emergency funds,” he added. Karen Behrens.
“All the institutions are involved, both the police, the environment, the Seremi of Health, the Fire Department, and the Economy,” he stressed.
Governor announced complaint for contamination in the Hand of the Desert
For his part, the regional governor of Antofagasta, Ricardo Diaz, announced legal action against those found responsible.
“Here, damage was caused to our heritage and we are going to make the corresponding complaints before Bidema so that the Prosecutor’s Office finds those responsible,” he said.
“Cicitem is also going to generate a perimeter closure today to inhibit access to that sector that has acid,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, the call is not to approach the place, due to the consequences it can have on people’s health.
“This is very dangerous, so, neighbors, I ask you please, for this weekend, while we repair this, do not go near the contaminated place,” he added.
“Among all of us we have to protect ourselves and we are going to recover the Hand of the Desert,” Díaz pointed out.
