The Normandy motorway (A13) will become, next year, the first to have barrier-free tolls, meaning that motorists will no longer need to stop to pay. Payment will be made automatically, and according to Sanef, this will represent a significant saving of time on the road.
Driving without stopping will soon be possible on the A13 motorway. This section of Normandy will be in “free flow” in a year, that is to say that motorists will no longer need to stop at tolls, whose barriers will be replaced by gantries. If the work began with the installation of a first gantry a few days ago, this major change, positive on several levels, still raises some questions about the payment of tolls.
These highways with barrier-free tolls will not be synonymous with free access, but a guarantee of fluidity, with some significant benefits. “Between Paris and Caen today, we stop up to five times,” reports Arnaud Quémart, general director of Sanef (Society of Highways of Northern and Eastern France).
Several options for paying
He explains that on this highway, “there is quite significant seasonal traffic. It will be more than half an hour which could be saved on the long weekends in May”, he underlines on the microphone of Europe 1. “It will also save fuel consumption since stopping and starting at a toll gate causes excess fuel consumption,” adds Arnaud Quémart.
Concretely, payment will be automatic, either with an electronic toll badge, securely attached to the windshield, or by registering your license plate in advance on the Sanef website. There are two other possibilities: pay on the Internet within three days of your trip or, and this will be unprecedented, at a tobacconist in partnership with the Française des Jeux network.
Enough to multiply the options and avoid the big hiccups of last summer on the A79, with 180,000 unpaid bills from motorists not necessarily aware of this new feature. On the A13, everything will be clearly displayed, and motorists will encounter new signs since it is a modification of the highway code.
