Automatic Super Resolution: Windows gets its own upscaling solution

Instead of Windows 12, there is a big feature update for Windows 11 aka 24H2 coming this year. A previously unannounced feature has now been discovered in a preview version: Automatic Super Resolution allows AI-supported upscaling in apps and games and is presumably an independent alternative to AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS.

The Windows preview build 26052 intended for developers has the option in question in the graphics settings, as a screenshot published on X shows. Under System -> Display -> Graphics Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) can be activated. The description of the function roughly translates as: “Use AI to play supported games more smoothly with more detail“. Another screenshot shows that the function can also be assigned to manually selected Windows apps and not just games.

However, the function is hidden in the preview version and only becomes visible by entering a command beforehand and then restarting it. as another X user writes. The link for further information about Auto SR so far only leads to the DirectX developer blog, which cannot (yet) provide more details.

What exactly is behind Auto SR remains hidden for the time being. However, it can be assumed that Microsoft will at some point introduce its own upscaling solution that is independent of the GPU manufacturer. It remains to be seen whether this will happen with the major feature update aka Windows 11 24H2, which will be released in the second half of the year.

What is Auto SR?

It is now speculated that Auto SR is an upscaling technology that is not tied to specific hardware or software and is therefore manufacturer-independent. It is hoped that many games that do not support AMD FSR, Intel XeSS or Nvidia DLSS will be able to enjoy a highly scaled resolution. However, the menu mentions “supported games”, which again means a certain requirement on the part of the respective game. The fact that Microsoft will offer the function as an extension of the DirectX interface collection to game developers for integration into their titles would also be at least a conceivable scenario because of the link to the DirectX blog above.

With AMD Radeon Super Resolution there is already a driver-based upscaling solution that potentially works with all games. However, this doesn’t work nearly as well as with AMD FSR or Nvidia DLSS, for which games are specifically optimized.
