Avanos Medical supports new recommendations on interventional procedures from the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

New guidelines support the use of radiofrequency ablation for osteoarthritic knee pain

ALPHARETTA, Ga., June 29, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Avanos Medical supports the announcement made today by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommending the use of radiofrequency ablation (ARF) for the treatment of osteoarthritic knee pain.

From the NICE announcement: “Radiofrequency energy is used to denervate target nerves. Radiofrequency energy can be delivered as conventional RF, cooled RF or pulsed RF. The aim is to reduce pain and delay the need for knee arthroplasty. There is good evidence that this procedure relieves pain in the short term. There are no major safety concerns and complications, including numbness, are well recognized.”

“We are extremely pleased that NICE has today recommended this interventional procedure,” said Dieter Krines, Vice President and General Manager of Avanos Europe. “We look forward to working with healthcare professionals to offer this treatment option to eligible patients across the UK.”

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and for patients who are not yet ready for surgery, Avanos ARF pain management products provide minimally invasive relief without the use of opioids.

“The new recommendations on interventional procedures published by NICE are a great step forward in contributing to the adoption of radiofrequency ablation therapy for the treatment of osteoarthritic knee pain,” said Robin Correa, MD, Anesthesia and Treatment Consultant for the Pain from the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust. “Having seen the transformation in the quality of life of the patients in my care using this treatment, I am delighted to see the publication of the NICE recommendations. I hope this will contribute to increasing awareness of this innovative therapy, which will improve the results from many more patients.
