The Wels public prosecutor’s office confirmed corresponding media reports from Friday and spoke of an “unusual and conspicuous violation of the doctor’s duty of care” by the doctor. There is no trial date yet.
The public prosecutor’s office accuses the doctor of serious treatment errors and deficiencies in the specialist medical information provided to the mother during a birth in December 2021. This led to a uterine rupture (a tear in the uterus, note), which made an emergency operation necessary.
The parents saw the failure of the medical profession and the midwife. According to her account, the mother was in labor for around 20 hours. Although she had originally decided against a cesarean section, she wanted to have the procedure carried out after severe pain. The senior doctor would have suggested a suction cup birth, but after unsuccessful attempts to bring the child into the world this way, an emergency caesarean section would have been carried out in the end.
The child’s brain did not receive enough oxygen and the newborn was only kept alive with the help of machines. Eight days after birth, life support measures were stopped. The mother suffered a lot of blood loss. The hospital did not want to comment on the case, pointing out that it is an ongoing procedure.
