Sometimes, a trivial physical manifestation can reveal major health problems. This is what happened to Becca Smith. At just 31 years old, the young woman, who had suffered from back pain for a long time, was diagnosed with lung cancer.
Back pain and lung cancer: “I have never smoked”
Sports coach, this resident of Chester in England nevertheless had a healthy lifestyle. “I lead an active and healthy lifestyle. I have never smoked. So I assumed I had injured myself in training and thought maybe I had a herniated disc.” she says. Faced with persistent pain, Becca Smith decides to do more in-depth tests, which reveal small cell lung cancer.
“My world has collapsed”, remembers the young woman. “My cancer had spread throughout my body, including my brain. The doctors said nothing could be done to save me.” she remembers.
“I have a group of very good friends, including my sisters, my mother, my father and my close family. Everyone spent time at my bedside to say goodbye. I have vague memories of people singing and told me stories, wearing masks because it was during the pandemic”remembers Becca Smith.
The British woman finally benefits from an innovative treatment, which has kept her alive until now. “I now try to view my cancer as a long-term health problem. With the support of my family and friends, I am able to get by. I like meeting my friends for coffee and going for a walk every morning to clear my head. I’m doing yoga, pilates, eating well and working out again. I even set up my own gym.” she congratulates herself.
Back pain: what is small cell lung cancer?
Small cell lung cancer, its real name Small Cell Bronchial Cancer (SCLC), is a cancer of the neuroendocrine cells of the bronchi. This form concerns around 15% of lung cancers in France. Its main risk factor is smoking.
“It is a cancer which progresses rapidly, but unfortunately the symptoms appear late, often after the disease has metastasized, which delays the diagnosis and darkens the patient’s prognosis”, specifies the H.Hartmann Institute of Radiotherapy and Radiosurgery.
