Baltic states are building defenses against Russia and Belarus

The Estonian Defense Ministry said on Friday that the countries’ ministers had signed an agreement in Riga according to which “Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania want to build defense facilities to restrict mobility in the coming years.”

The aim is to “deter and, if necessary, defend against military threats,” the Estonian Defense Ministry continued. The “elements” on the ground would be “positioned in the landscape taking into account the results of the analysis of the enemy’s intentions, the environment and the defense plan,” it said. No further information about the facilities was provided.

“Russia’s war in Ukraine has shown that in addition to equipment, ammunition and personnel, physical defense facilities are also necessary,” said Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur, according to his ministry’s statement. His Latvian colleague Andris Spruds said on the online service X, formerly Twitter: “We will build the Baltic defense line to defend NATO’s eastern flank and deny our opponents freedom of movement.”

Latvia and Lithuania have borders with both Russia and Belarus, Estonia shares a border with Russia. The Baltic states have been consistent supporters of Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
