If you are like most homeowners smartwatchesit is likely that you use your device on a daily basis — and like most of these users, it is also possible that you do not clean it properly, including accessories such as bracelets.

If that’s really your case, a new study published in scientific journal Advances in Infectious Diseases e released by The New York Post, maybe it will serve as a warning for you to change your habits. According to the analysis, 95% of the tested smartwatch straps contained some type of bacterium — some potentially dangerous ones.

More precisely, researchers from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) tested bracelets made of different materials, such as plastic, rubber, fabric, leather, and metal, to determine which materials harbored the greatest accumulation of bacteria.

Among the verified bacteria, the Staphylococcus sppresponsible for staphylococcal infections, has been found in 85% of the bracelets. Furthermore, about 60% of accessories tested positive for Escherichia coli and finally, 30% tested positive for Pseudomonasan antibiotic-resistant bacteria associated with BECAUSE and to pneumonia.

In addition, it was found that bacteria were more concentrated on wristbands than tissuefollowed by those fairs of plasticof rubber and, finally, of leather. Ace of metalmainly gold and silver, carried less bacterial load.

The reason for these bacteria outbreaks is simple: people don’t sanitize their bracelets often. This is especially worrying considering that many smartwatches are used during physical activities, creating an even more favorable environment for the proliferation of these microorganisms. Healthcare professional devices are also highly susceptible to bacterial buildup.
