2024-02-04 05:19:00

A barge going up the Scheldt off the coast of Hemiksem (province of Antwerp) collided with a ferry on Saturday evening. This collision was reported by the Maritime and Coastal Services Agency (MDK). No injuries were reported.

The ferry ‘Jan Van Eyck’ was sailing between Bazel (Kruibeke) and Hemiksem when it was hit by the barge ‘Arwen’. The ferry’s windows were shattered, but the two passengers and two crew members escaped unhurt. The police arrived on the scene.

The ferry service, which connects the two banks of the Scheldt, was suspended for the rest of the evening following the incident. Tomorrow, another boat will provide the connection between Hemiksem and Bazel.
