The investigation into vote buying in Triggiano, in the Bari area, blows up the center-left’s discussion on the rules of the primaries which should have designated the candidate in the Apulian capital. The investigations also involved a councilor of the Apulian regional council led by the dem, Michele Emiliano, who resigned. The councilor’s husband was also arrested. For this reason Giuseppe Conte, arriving in Bari, made it known that the conditions for coalition primaries no longer exist for the 5 Star Movement. And, therefore, the Five Star Movement will support Michele Laforgia, a name on which the Italian Left is also banking. On the other side, with Vito Leccese, remain the Democratic Party and the other half of Avs, the green one of Angelo Bonelli. A move, that of Conte, which cuts the center-left front in half, provided that one of the parties involved does not give up its candidate. But judging by the irritation filtering from the Nazarene, this does not seem to be the scenario that is being prepared.

“Conte’s choice to exit the primaries is incomprehensible, if the M5s thinks it can win alone against the right, go ahead”, they underline from the dem headquarters, destroying any possible hypothesis of converging on Laforgia. “Have respect for the city of Bari, for the centre-left voters and don’t think of giving morality lessons to anyone”, add the Dems underlining that “the Democratic Party remains alongside Bari which has already demonstrated how important the Democratic Party is as a garrison of legality and good administration. We are certain that the Democratic Party together with the center-left will win the elections again against this right.” Conte’s choice is also “very serious” for Debora Serracchiani, head of Justice of the Democratic Party, for whom “the city of Bari and the people of Bari do not deserve it. And not even the Democratic Party, which in decades of hard work has demonstrated in practice that it is on the side of legality and politics that does not bow to malfeasance and mafias. Conte don’t think about giving us licenses of legality”, adds Serracchiani.

«Our party and above all our secretary who represents it does not have to hide a past or political choices that are not very relevant to ethics and morality, she has a biography reflected in the fight for legality. Questioning it for one’s own electoral interests is miserable”, reiterates Marco Furfaro, of the dem secretariat. Before Conte left the primary table, the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, had warned: «The Triggiano affair is very serious if the accusations are confirmed. The line of the Democratic Party is very clear: we do not accept dirty votes”, underlined Schlein in a note. «We do not tolerate bought votes. We have made a commitment to change the Democratic Party and we are working head-on every day to build an alternative to this right. We will not retreat an inch on this line and on legality.” A fratricidal feud.
