This is a new illustration of the crisis of medical deserts in France: the seaside resort of Barneville-Carteret in the Channel no longer has any doctors, because the only general practitioner has gone on vacation. A worrying absence, in the middle of the tourist season.

The seaside resort of Barneville-Carteret (Manche) has 2,300 inhabitants year-round, and more than 10,000 in summer, but no doctor. Having left on vacation for the whole month of August, the last general practitioner could leave the town by the end of the year, which is of great concern to local residents. The mayor, David Legouet, already has an idea for the future: “The doctors who are retired and who can work one or two days with the CPR and the ARS, and the telemedicine which will arrive in the region in the next 6 months.”

A mobilization for salaried medicine

An association is campaigning to change software: its petition in favor of salaried medicine has collected 1,200 signatures. “The health centers can be created by the municipal authorities of agglomeration or the departments. We want a commitment from our elected officials to be able to create the conditions for welcoming salaried doctors”explains Aude Jourdain, of the association “for a health center on the coast of the Isles”. A salaried medical center is planned in Valognes (Manche), but not enough to immediately respond to the concerns of the Barnevillais.
