Rome/Paris – On Wednesday, two more opening round of 16 matches of the Champions League will take place. Bayern Munich will try to recover from the Bundesliga debacle 0:3 in Leverkusen at Lazio Rome. Paris St. Germain will host San Sebastian, who have not scored in their last four competitive games. Both Valentine’s Day fights will start at 9:00 p.m.

While Bayern is in the round of 16 of the Champions League for the sixteenth time in a row, Lazio is only the third time in history. The last time they lost in this stage of the competition three years ago was to the Bavarian opponent after defeats 1:4 at home and 1:2 in Munich.

Lazio are unbeaten in their last four competitive games at their stadium and have not conceded three times in a row in Rome, but are only eighth in the Italian league. Bayern is already five points behind leaders Leverkusen from second place in the German league.

“It will be a challenge, we mustn’t look at the Serie A table. Lazio is a big club with great fans. They have an experienced coach (Maurizio Sarri) who is always ready to surprise you,” Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said.

“We are facing a battle with the absolute best in the world, one of the strongest teams in the world. An extremely difficult match, but many teams would like to be in our place now. We are fine,” said Sarri.

San Sebastian were unbeaten in the Champions League this autumn and had the best defense of the competition’s group stage with two goals conceded. It advanced to the round of 16 after 20 years and for the second time in history, in 2004 it was eliminated with another French team, Lyon. Real Sociedad will face PSG in their first competitive match on Wednesday.

“There comes a part of the season when you play the most important matches. You have to keep calm. We are used to tough opponents. We hope to create an amazing atmosphere at home together with the fans and be a better team on the pitch,” said the coach of the Paris team, Luis Enrique.

His charges are unbeaten in 16 competitive duels in a row and have won eight of the last nine matches. The French league leaders beat Lille 3-1 on Saturday despite star striker Kylian Mbappé remaining on the bench. On the other hand, San Sebastian unexpectedly lost to Pamplona 0:1 at home at the weekend, prolonged the wait for a scored goal and belongs to the seventh place.

“If we progressed to the quarter-finals, it would be a huge shock. But if we manage to play like we did against Inter Milan, who have never beaten us in the group, why can’t we do it against PSG? We believe in ourselves, even if we have one of the candidates waiting for us overall victory,” said the coach of the Basque team, Imanol Alguacil.
