Because of chips, car production in Britain has fallen to its lowest level since the 1950s

Data showed the decline in car production in Britain during 2022 to the lowest level since 1956, due to the global shortage of semiconductor chips.

The Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Traders said that 775,014 cars were produced during 2022, a decrease of 9.8 percent compared to 2021, when production reached 859,575 cars.

Total production declined by 40.5 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels, and 2022 production increased by 9.4 percent compared to 2021, but it did not compensate for the decline in exports by 14 percent.

The association said that the lack of semiconductor chips limited the ability of auto manufacturers to manufacture cars, and record levels of electric cars were produced, as most of the cars manufactured were either fully electric or hybrids, according to the German.

“These numbers reflect how difficult 2022 will be for the British car industry, even though we have built more electric cars than before,” said Mike Hawes, executive director of the Association.
