After Beck missed out on being inducted into the Hall of Fame again in 2022 and was soon mocked by Neil Young for it, he joins in the magic Thinking About You a wonderfully balladesque singer-songwriter gem with chamber music folk subtlety as a single out of the box.
„I pull the curtain and lay in bed/ I’ve got fifteen movies of you/ Playin‘ in my head/ Chasing the moonlight/ Watching the ocean turn blue/ Just thinking about you/ Thinking about you“. In three and a half timeless minutes, Beck continues after the pop of Hyperspace In 2019, the reversal thrust back into the intimate, not necessarily reduced, but sparingly staged: a melancholically plucked acoustic guitar does not need more than soulful fingerpicking and one of these romantically musing melodies with an open sound space. Later, the background wakes up cautiously and reservedly, sailing with banjo and harmonica as peacefully and nostalgically as sadly to the hint of gentle, subtle strings.
It has a bit of something to do with thinking easily through the melancholy Decemberistsbut above all by the mood that the masterpiece Sea Change and its unofficial successor Morning Phase radiated. Thinking About You is perhaps not as overwhelmingly moving as the best pieces of these career highlights, but in a graceful way with its simple, dream-walking hook absolutely catchy, pleasant and simply beautiful, so that the pleasantly engaging charisma seems like a universal consolation for heart and soul . (And in retrospect will hopefully also serve as a harbinger of a stylistically similar album).
