“Bee Winter Mortality in Belgium: Understanding the COLOSS Survey Results”

A winter mortality map is drawn up each year, both in Flanders and in Wallonia. Winter… a really crucial period for bees? This is confirmed by the Leuven researcher: “The COLOSS survey has been taking place at European level for nine years now, and therefore in Belgium. It allows us to see the situation in apiaries at the end of winter. It is done on a voluntary basis, so it is a survey – and therefore not exhaustive.” What emerges from this COLOSS is, according to Agnès Fayet, a loss of between 10 and 30% of the bees. And Flanders, in fact, stands out: “To give you an idea, in East Flanders, where there have been the most losses this year, it is on average 34%. And in Namur and in the province of Luxembourg, where there have been the least loss is about 10%”.
