Before Nolan Wells’ death, Mississippi island was full of fun, friends and an unspoken danger

Investigation Continues Into Death of 18-Year-Old Nolan Wells

The death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, whose body was discovered in the water off Horn Island on July 6, 2026, has prompted an expansive investigation involving local, state, and federal authorities. Wells, a rising sophomore on the Southwest Mississippi Community College football team and a former Ocean Springs High School student, was reported missing on the night of July 4 after failing to return from a boating trip to the island with friends.

Timeline and GPS Evidence

Official records from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MSDMR) provide a detailed account of the boat’s movements on the day Wells disappeared. The vessel departed a dock at 9:56 a.m. on July 4 and arrived at Horn Island at 11:14 a.m. According to GPS tracking data, the boat departed the island at 4:31 p.m. and returned to its original departure dock. Later that evening, the boat traveled to the Fort Bayou boat launch at 7:19 p.m. before being transported by land to the residence of the boat’s owners.

While Wells was last seen on the island at 3:00 p.m., according to the office of attorney Ben Crump, he was not on board when the vessel departed for the mainland. The GPS data indicates the boat’s departure from the island occurred approximately 30 minutes after a dispatch call was placed from the vessel reporting that it was taking on water. During that call, a person on board confirmed to dispatchers that everyone was accounted for and in good health.

Federal Involvement and Public Threats

The investigation has drawn the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is assisting the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in analyzing digital evidence. Sheriff John Ledbetter noted that such cooperation is routine, as Horn Island is situated on federal land. Additionally, the FBI confirmed it is working to address interstate threats directed at individuals related to the matter.

Nolan Wells Island Death Mystery Deepens

The atmosphere surrounding the case has become increasingly tense, with reports of death threats targeting those involved. Jackson County Chancery Judge Ashlee Cole, the stepmother of one of the teens who accompanied Wells, stated publicly that her family has received threats. Tracestin Shepherd, a friend of Wells who was on the trip, also reported receiving threats, stating his concern for his friends and family.

Conflicting Accounts and Ongoing Search for Information

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has interviewed the three friends who accompanied Wells, as well as more than 60 other witnesses. While the owners of the boat and those who were with Wells have cooperated with the investigation, Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, have expressed skepticism regarding the circumstances of his disappearance. His father stated that it was out of character for his son to remain on the island alone.

Attorney Ben Crump, representing the family, has alleged that the accounts provided by the teens who traveled with Wells contained contradictions, particularly regarding why he was left behind. An independent autopsy was conducted in Washington, D.C., following an initial autopsy on July 7, the results of which were not immediately made public. Crime scene investigator Sheryl McCollum noted that the high volume of holiday visitors on the island makes the lack of eyewitness accounts regarding Wells’ separation from his group particularly puzzling. Investigators continue to gather photographic and video evidence from individuals who were present on the island during the July 4 holiday.
