The podium is completed by the Netherlands, with 34 medals. Italy wins three more and Belgium leaves with 80 award-winning beers. The award ceremony took place on Monday at Horeca Expo in Ghent.

Certainly, Belgium and Italy presented the largest number of samples at this international event during which more than 1,800 beers from 37 countries were submitted to a jury of around a hundred members from the four corners of the world. This second Italian place nonetheless reflects the current popularity of La Botte for beer. “Many micro-breweries have flourished across the country, offering a wide variety of high-quality, experimental and artisanal beers,” comment the BBC organizers.

The detailed rankings reflect this Italian breakthrough since Millican Extra, a 7% amber beer produced by the Mezzopasso brewery in Abruzzo, was named best beer in the competition.

On the Belgian side, the session IPA, Dance Rave Dance, from the Brussels brewery Surréaliste, was named best Belgian beer. We will note the good performances of the Ter Dolen breweries in Houthalen (Limburg) which leaves with four medals, as does the Belgian subsidiary of Swinkels Family Brewers. The latter saw its emblematic Rodenbach and two of its variants (Alexander and Grand Cru) achieve the hat-trick in the Rouge de Flandre category. On the Walloon side, the Dupont brewery in Tourpes (Hainaut) leaves with three medals.

This 12th edition was held in Turnhout at the end of October. The jurors blind tasted the beers, divided into around fifty different categories (seasonal, white, IPA, gluten-free, etc.). The next BBC will take up residence in Ghent in autumn 2024.
