Belgium bans all passenger travel from the UK for 24 hours

With this measure, the federal government wishes to contain the new strain of Covid-19 which has been discovered in England and which is rapidly spreading across borders.

In concrete terms, all passenger travel from the United Kingdom to Belgium is prohibited on Monday, December 21, 2020. This applies both to travelers having Belgium as their final destination, and to travelers in transit. This measure does not concern freight, specifies the office of the Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday announced new lockdowns for London and the east and south-east of England. The reason is a new strain of the coronavirus that has been discovered. The new variant would be much more contagious.

As a precaution, Belgium has decided to ban all arrivals from the United Kingdom for 24 hours. “Belgians and inhabitants of Belgium who are at risk of being stranded in the United Kingdom can contact the Belgian embassy in London or the FPS Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation for support,” adds the cabinet Verlinden .

The Netherlands was the first in Europe to issue a flight ban from the UK last night due to the virus mutation detected there. Since then, several countries have followed suit, including France where all travel from the United Kingdom will be banned for 48 hours.
