Asunción, IP Agency.- Since the inauguration of the Government, Itaipu Binacional focused its social investment on supporting programs aimed at strengthening the country’s public health, thus allocating 43,815,730 dollars (304,650,772,213 guaraníes) to improving the health system, infrastructure, equipment and supplies in said sector.
All the actions undertaken by the National Government in terms of support for public health, through Itaipu, during the first two years, aim to strengthen the national health system for the benefit of the more than seven million Paraguayans.
Investments in these areas have intensified since the beginning of the health emergency, caused by the covid-19 pandemic; Therefore, since March of this year, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare (Mspybs) has been supported with much more emphasis.
Investment of US$ 17,626,543 to combat the pandemic
To fight against covid-19, Itaipu has allocated an amount of 17,626,543 dollars (117,085,710,054 guaraníes), of which 3 million dollars have been approved for the execution of a contingency plan at the request of the portfolio of Health and that allowed the acquisition of reagents and medical supplies. Also, at the request of said institution, $4,749,597 was invested to provide highly complex equipment to specialized and reference hospitals nationwide.
Among other contributions made are also personal protective medical equipment and the provision of supplies and medicines, which were considered an absolute priority by the Health portfolio. In this sense, investments worth $1,431,926 and $3,745,021, respectively, were made within the framework of projects to support emergency actions and procurement for the health system.
For humanitarian aid in quarantine shelters and food distribution in Alto Paraná, both for the operation of soup kitchens and for indigenous families and communities in 15 districts, an investment of $4,700,000 was made. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Binacional distributed a total of 2,593,500 kilos of food.
Construction of 66 USF
Among the main actions undertaken by Itaipu on the Paraguayan side in favor of public health is also the construction of 66 new Family Health Units (FSU) for a value of 113,075 million guaraníes. The USF are distributed in four departments of the country: 25 in Central, 23 in Alto Paraná, 12 in Concepción and 6 in San Pedro.
Revitalization of district hospitals
Likewise, the hospitals (regional and district) of Ciudad del Este (work completed and delivered), Hernandarias, Presidente Franco, Minga Guazú (works soon to be inaugurated), Pedro Juan Caballero and Concepción (works completed), have been equipped and modernized. a total amount of 20,619 million guaraníes.
Drinking Water and Sanitation System
In terms of investments in Water Supply Systems, R28,532 million has been allocated for the construction of 66 artesian wells, the installation of tanks and drinking water distribution networks.
Care for people with disabilities
The Entity has also made an investment of 25,337 million guaraníes to carry out programs that aim at the care and rehabilitation of people with disabilities, and assistance to women and children in vulnerable situations.
Since the beginning of this pandemic, Itaipu Binacional and its employees have carried out strict measures to ensure the provision of electrical energy in the midst of a health emergency, considering that the hydroelectric plant serves more than 85% of Paraguay’s electricity demand. Likewise, the Entity will continue all projects that contribute to optimizing health services and fighting this pandemic that is plaguing the entire world.
