With the support of Defence, the FPS Foreign Affairs sent an A400M transport plane which made several return flights between Niamey, the capital of Niger, and Libreville, the capital of Gabon, before leaving for Belgium. The A400M arrived at Melsbroek military airport overnight from Saturday to Sunday.
This return operation is welcomed by the Minister of Defence, Ludivine Dedonder, who says she is “very happy that Defense was once again able to put its stone to the building in this successful return operation”.
Since the military coup, which took place on July 26, some 240 Belgians, European citizens and dependents have been repatriated in total. A hundred Belgians and rights holders were able to leave Niger at the beginning of the month, in particular via French flights. In recent days, Defense has carried out several other flights with a Belgian A400M. In addition to Belgian nationals, other European citizens and dependents were also evacuated from Niamey, the Nigerien capital.
