Benefits of Hearing Aids: Extending Lifespan and Preventing Cognitive Decline

2024-01-13 01:06:43

Hearing-impaired and hard-of-hearing people may experience accelerated cognitive decline, leading to an increased risk of dementia. Moreover, hard-of-hearing people may have difficulty communicating with others, which may also affect their mental health. What is even more dangerous is that when an emergency occurs In this situation, it is difficult for them to detect the sound of the alarm, so dangerous accidents are more likely to occur. These effects on hearing loss may shorten the patient’s lifespan.

However, a study published in the journal “Lancet Healthy Longevity” on the 3rd found that wearing hearing aids can help “protect” hearing-impaired patients from premature death. Scientists at the University of Southern California found that patients who regularly used hearing aids had a 24% lower risk of death.

The study analyzed tracking data on more than a thousand hard of hearing patients, including mortality from 1999 to 2012. The results showed that only about 237 hard of hearing people used hearing aids at least once a week, and another 1,483 people with hearing impairment never used hearing aids. But there was no difference in the risk of death among those who used hearing aids occasionally, and only those who used hearing aids regularly had a significantly lower risk. And regardless of factors such as age, race, income, education and degree of hearing loss, as long as hearing aids are worn regularly, the risk of death is lower.

Help avoid accidents

Although this was a correlational study, there is no evidence directly proving the mechanism by which hearing aid wearing affects the risk of death. However, it is reasonable to infer that regular wearing of hearing aids should help avoid accidents, enhance communication with others, improve the mental health and cognitive function of hard of hearing people, and thereby extend their lifespan.

Coincidentally, a study published in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology on the 4th showed that wearing hearing aids may be related to reducing the risk of dementia in hard of hearing people. The study examined data from more than 500,000 people over the age of 50 in southern Denmark and tracked their health status from 2003 to 2017. The results showed that people with hearing impairment had a 7% increased risk of dementia, and those who did not use hearing aids had a higher risk of 14%.

Although hearing aids can significantly improve the lives and health of hard of hearing people, there are still many people who are reluctant to wear them because they are afraid of trouble or looking old. Doctors remind that hearing aids are now more diverse in design and more convenient to wear. They encourage the public that if they do have hearing damage, they must try to use hearing aids for the sake of health and longevity.
