Former France and Manchester City international Benjamin Mendy has signed with Lorient on a free transfer. informs press service of the French club.
At the end of June 2023, Mendy’s contract with Manchester City expired and he joined the French club on a free transfer. The agreement is for 2 years.
2018 world champion accused of rape cleared of all charges
Mendy last played in August 2021. After the first rape allegations were made, Manchester City suspended the player pending investigation. The reason for the detention was the statement of a 17-year-old girl that the athlete sexually assaulted her in August 2021 at his home in Cheshire. Later, the player was accused of several more episodes of violence, a total of nine charges were brought against the Frenchman.
In January 2023, the Frenchman was found not guilty on seven counts: six for rape and one for harassment. But the jury failed to reach a final decision on another rape charge and one count of attempted rape. Then the case was redirected for retrial, which today ended in favor of Mendy.
On July 14, 2023, all charges were dropped from the football player. After the announcement of the decision, Mendy broke down and burst into tears in the courtroom.
Mendy joined City in 2017 from Monaco for £52m, becoming the most expensive defender in football history at the time. He played 75 matches for the team, in which he scored two goals. He is currently without a club. Mendy is the 2018 World Champion with France.
