Cartoonist Bettina Bexte has been awarded the German Cartoon Prize. She was honored on Sunday in Bremen for depicting a Christmas scene in which a girl receives a pony as a gift thanks to virtual reality, and received the Winged Pencil in Gold. Silver went to Christina Salz for a vision of a dream woman created with the help of AI. The third prize winner was the Austrian Oliver Ottitsch for a work on the trend towards self-optimization.

The motto of the competition was “Data are just people too”. A total of 293 cartoonists submitted 1,329 works. The 18-year-old Anna Luise Sturm from Leipzig was honored as the best young artist. Their cartoon shows that the all-knowing robot waiter may not be a guarantee of a successful evening following all, they said. When asked for a wine recommendation, the robot slays the guests as a walking encyclopedia with countless facts.

The German Cartoon Prize was launched in 2000 by the “Sächsische Zeitung”, the “Weser-Kurier” has been on board since 2016 and the “Rheinische Post” since last year. The prizes are endowed with a total of 11,000 euros.
