A network of scammers continues to deceive Cubans who intend to leave the country, through the sale of fake plane tickets.

The desperation to leave the Island becomes unsustainable and many fall into the hands of unscrupulous people who profit from the needs of others.

One of the most recent cases is that of a family that sold all its properties in Cuba to purchase tickets to Guyana. The scammers promised seats on an Aruba Airlines flight that would travel the route between Havana and Georgetown. However, the deception would not stop there.

The victims of the robbery paid $1,400.00 USD to an alleged private manager. She then sold more plane tickets to other people making more and more false promises. For example, the trip would include transfers to Uruguay. In addition, clandestine passage through Brazil was guaranteed after landing in Guyana.

Mode of operation

The modus operandi is reiterated again and again; More Cubans continue to “take the bait” as desperation to leave the Island increases. It turns out that famous “travel agents” openly advertise their exclusive services. One of them is the sale of tickets and another is the hiring of managers who would collect the money in Cuba.

However, as expected, these agents were never seen and both intermediaries and clients were scammed. One of the couples, victims of a scam like this, had planned their trip to Uruguay with that supposed travel agency.

The scam amounted to $4,200.00 USD. To obtain such an amount of money they were forced to sell their house. Now they have no housing and neither does the longed-for plane ticket.

To avoid falling into a scam like this, it is important to verify the authenticity of the plane tickets. This can be checked at airports, physical agencies or on the airline’s official website.
