Beyoncé’s ALBUM Cowboy Carter, which was released March 29, has surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, as announced by Parkwood Entertainment, Wednesday, May 8.

Shortly after its release, Spotify declared Cowboy Carter to be the most streamed album in a single day of 2024 on the platform, marking the first time this year that a country album topped the ranking. This record was broken by Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department.

The Spotify record isn’t Cowboy Carter’s only accomplishment since its release. The album — which features country music legends like Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Linda Martell, as well as young performers like Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, and Shaboozey — debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 as well as the Top Country Albums chart, the latter making Beyoncé the first black woman to ever lead the list since its inception in 1964.

Additionally, 23 songs from the album charted on the Billboard Hot 100, which helped the 32-time Grammy winner increase her career total from 85 entries to 106 on the chart. Thus, he is the 17th artist to have charted more than 100 records on the Hot 100 during his career.

Before Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé already had two charting singles from the album, “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ‘Em.” The latter debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and made the “II Hands II Heaven” singer the first black woman with a number one song on the Hot Country Songs chart.

The arrival of Cowboy Carter, the anticipated follow-up to Act II from 2022’s Renaissance, had fans excited when Beyoncé first announced the country album during the 2024 Super Bowl. Ahead of its release, the singer opened up about what inspired the genre-defying album.

“This album has been over five years in the making,” he wrote on Instagram. “This was born out of an experience I had years ago where I didn’t feel welcome… and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and delved into the archives our music is rich.”

“It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world,” he continued.

“As well as amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives to educating about the history of our music.”

The “Jolene” singer went on to say that the criticism she faced when entering country music forced her to challenge herself past the boundaries set by her critics. As a continuation of the Renaissance, Beyoncé said she spent time “shifting and blending genres” to create the bold work, which she says is more than just a country album.

“This is not a Country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album,” he said. “This is act ii COWBOY CARTER, and I’m proud to share it with all of you!” (People/Z-3)
