On the second day of his visit to Poland, US President Joe Biden will meet representatives of several Eastern European NATO countries in Warsaw on Wednesday (2:45 p.m. CET). The group in the so-called “Bucharest 9” format includes Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – i.e. the states along NATO’s eastern flank.

Biden meets Eastern European NATO partners
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is also expected to attend the deliberations. The background to Biden’s visit and the consultations is the approaching first anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine. Russia invaded there on February 24, 2022.
Biden traveled to the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Monday, initially in a secret operation and under the strictest security precautions. There he met President Volodymyr Zelenskyj and, accompanied by an air alert, visited various symbolic places in the metropolis together with his colleague. Biden used the short visit primarily to promise Ukraine continued US support and to send a signal of unity to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
