Bielefeld police warn after fraudsters take card and PIN

An elderly couple in the Bielefeld-Stieghorst district fell victim to telephone fraudsters on October 28, 2026, when a caller posing as a bank security employee convinced them to hand over their debit card and PIN under the false pretext of settling online shopping debts, according to a police warning published on October 29, 2026.

The Initial Phone Call and Doorstep Interception

The incident began around 13:30 on Wednesday, October 28, when the female senior received a phone call from an unknown individual claiming to represent a bank security department. The caller asserted that the couple had outstanding debts with an online retailer that needed immediate settlement. To facilitate payment, the caller stated that a colleague would visit their home to collect the funds. Shortly afterward, a female suspect arrived at the residence. When the seniors stated they could not provide the demanded cash sum, the visitor demanded their bank card instead. The caller on the phone then instructed the victims to reveal their personal identification number (PIN), claiming the measure was necessary to secure the account. The couple initially complied with these instructions.

Contradictory Demands Reveal the Deception

Roughly ten minutes after the initial visit, the unknown woman returned to the front door. This time, she demanded a smaller amount of cash alongside valuable jewelry, claiming the transfer would protect the items from a potential theft. This sudden shift in rationale aroused suspicion, prompting the seniors to refuse any further handover of valuables. Upon contacting their financial institution immediately afterward, the couple discovered that unauthorized cash withdrawals had already been executed using the surrendered debit card. The Bielefeld police department launched an ongoing investigation and is actively searching for the female suspect who collected the items.

Official Warnings Regarding Bank Security Protocols

Authorities in Bielefeld reiterate that genuine bank employees never demand the handover of debit cards or associated PINs to unknown individuals at residential doorsteps. Individuals who have already surrendered their cards are urged to contact their financial institution immediately to block the accounts and report any unauthorized transactions. The case highlights how criminals combine fabricated financial liabilities with simulated security interventions to exert psychological pressure on vulnerable targets.
