[Central News Agency]Australian diamond miners announced today that they have unearthed a rare pure pink diamond in Angola, Africa, believed to be the largest in 300 years, weighing 170 carats, named “The Lulo Rose (The Lulo Rose)”. This giant diamond may be auctioned for a new sky-high price in the future.
The giant diamond, discovered at the Lulo mine in the most diamond-rich region of northeastern Angola, is the largest diamond ever mined, the Lucapa Diamond Company said in a statement to investors, Agence France-Presse reported. One of the largest pink diamonds ever.
The Type IIa pink diamond is one of the rarest and purest diamonds, and the historic discovery was highly welcomed by the mine’s partners, the Angolan government.
Diamantino Azevedo, Angola’s Minister of Mineral Resources, said: “The discovery of this spectacular pink diamond in a record at the Lulo mine continues to demonstrate the important role Angola plays on the world stage”.
The diamond will be open for bids internationally, possibly at a dizzyingly high price.
Similar pink diamonds have sold for record-breaking prices in the past, although the Lulo rose has to be cut and polished to know its true value, and will lose 50 percent of its weight in the process.
In 2017, the 59.6-carat “Pink Star” sold for US$71.2 million (approximately NT$2,134.4 million) at a Hong Kong auction, making it the most expensive diamond ever sold.
