Bike stolen: What you need to consider so that the insurance pays

50 bicycles are stolen every day in Austria. According to consumer advocates from the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor, thefts at home are usually covered by household insurance. In shared rooms, the protection only applies if the bike was locked. Household insurance does not cover bikes that are stolen while on the road; some insurance companies offer an extension.

In order for the insurance to pay in the event of damage, the policyholder must comply with certain contractual obligations: When parking the bicycle, for example, it is necessary to secure the bicycle frame to a stationary object (such as a lamp post) with a high-quality lock (such as a U-lock, folding lock or chain lock).

The insurance conditions often also regulate which bicycle lock must be used, according to the Chamber of Labor.

Anyone who transports the bicycle on a bicycle rack that is permanently connected to the car must lock it on this rack with a bicycle lock or a corresponding locking device on the bicycle rack. Attention: Insurance coverage may be excluded if the theft occurs at night (for example between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.).

Insurance protection abroad

If the e-bike is used while traveling abroad, consumers should inquire beforehand whether their insurance is valid across Europe or worldwide. Coverage is also possible through travel insurance, which can also be included in a credit card.

The Chamber of Labor also advises checking the insurance conditions: It is good if e-bikes are expressly listed as insured. If value limits are included and the bike is very expensive, the insured sum should be compared with the purchase price.
