The billionaire boss of Microsoft, Bill Gates, and his ex-wife Melinda, announced on Wednesday that they are making a record donation of $20 billion to their foundation, the “Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation”. This is the largest sum they have ever paid.

Bill Gates explains in a press release, that “the great crises of our time demand that we do more”. “The pandemic is one of the greatest setbacks in history. The war against Ukraine is a gigantic tragedy for the whole world. The damage caused by climate change is already worse than most models predicted. The United States has taken a huge step backwards for gender equality and women’s health,” he tweeted.

This donation comes within the framework of the new objective of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation”, which now wants to distribute 9 billion dollars per year by 2026, against 6 billion per year currently.

“In the future, I intend to give almost all of my assets to the foundation,” he continues on the social networks. “I will go down and eventually out of the list of the richest people in the world.”

“I have an obligation to return my resources to society in a way that has the greatest impact in reducing suffering and improving lives,” he justifies, inviting other great wealth to do the same.
