Binance announced it was investigating a potential security issue on Thursday after large transfers on the platform, though the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange insisted that all customer funds remained fully secure.
Massive Outflows Trigger Rapid Response
The sudden outflow of digital assets caught the immediate attention of traders and prompted the platform’s founder to speculate publicly about a hacking attempt. “Our teams are aware of reports of a potential security issue and are actively investigating,” a Binance spokesperson said in a public statement. “Rest assured that user funds are completely safe.”
The spokesperson added that security teams were reviewing all relevant information with urgency and urged platform users to remain cautious of scams. Countless individuals rely on Binance, with hundreds of thousands of users engaging in buying, selling, and keeping digital currencies valued in the billions on the exchange. Unlike traditional bank deposits, government insurance does not protect funds held in accounts with entities like Binance against losses, meaning any potential refunds might depend entirely on the choice of individual exchanges.
Stablecoin Giants Freeze Billions
As news of the outflow broke, two major digital stablecoin issuers moved quickly to limit potential fallout. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino announced on the social media platform X that his company had frozen more than $1.567 billion worth of its digital currency linked to a potential Binance exchange hack.

Jeremy Allaire, CEO of stablecoin issuer Circle, confirmed a parallel containment measure. “Circle is closely tracking reports of a potential exploit involving Binance,” Allaire stated on X, referencing the company’s United States Dollar Coin via its shorthand symbol while noting that its valuation remains tied directly to the dollar. “In coordination with law enforcement, we have frozen more than 800M USDC associated with the incident and will continue supporting the investigation.”
Escalating Threat Landscape in 2025
The sudden outflow from Binance occurred as global cybersecurity defenses operate under heightened alert regarding potential novel attacks facilitated by recent advancements in artificial intelligence. Digital currency has been a primary target of hackers for years. During 2025, Coinbase revealed that unauthorized individuals had breached and stolen customer personal data, subsequently demanding a $20 million extortion payment from the company. Coinbase refused to pay and offered a bounty for information leading to arrests instead.
Founder Weighs In From the Sidelines
Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance who stepped down as CEO in 2023 after pleading guilty to breaking U.S. anti-money laundering laws and subsequently received a full pardon from President Donald Trump, weighed in on the unfolding events.

“It does look like a hack on Binance,” Zhao wrote on X. “As a shareholder, I expect all user funds will be fully covered,” adding that user funds are safe.
