Binance suffered a $6.34 billion heist on October 29, 2026, when hackers exploited internal AI tools and compromised employee devices through a multi-stage social engineering campaign involving fake job interviews and trojanized software, according to investigations detailed by the cryptocurrency exchange.
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) attributed the attack to North Korea-affiliated hackers, though North Korea denies allegations linking it to cryptocurrency theft and other cybercrimes.
The Bottom Line
- Asset Replenishment: Binance stated it has replenished 98% of the affected assets using its own reserves while continuing to acquire illiquid currencies.
- Outflow Stabilization: Customer net outflows amounted to around 3pc of the assets on the platform following the reopening of withdrawals.
- Security Overhaul: The exchange rebuilt its compromised wallet systems and internal AI tooling while deploying enhanced behavioural anomaly detection across all employee devices.
Multi-Stage Infiltration Through Fake Recruitment and Trojanized Code
The attack vector began months prior to the October extraction. According to security reports outlined by Binance, the intrusion started in June when a Wallet DevOps engineer (designated as Engineer A) downloaded a tampered Homebrew installation after searching for a popular artificial intelligence (AI) tool on a search engine. Although Binance detected the malware and rotated credentials, attackers harvested information regarding the engineer’s team.

In September, the operation escalated when attackers targeted a second employee (Engineer B) through a legitimate job-search platform. The threat actors posed as a Project Director and arranged video interviews with a fictitious company, establishing rapport by sharing personal photos and social media accounts. During the second-round interview on a chat application, Engineer B was instructed to download a coding assignment containing hidden malware. The malicious repository utilized advanced evasion techniques, replacing a legitimate development component to establish an external connection.
By October 20, the adversary used Engineer B's compromised environment to abuse an internal AI tool, gaining control over software utilized by Engineer A and a third employee, Wallet Software Engineer C. On October 29, the attackers utilized stolen container deployment credentials to access an internal wallet signing service, initiating unauthorized transactions between 17:15 and 19:56.
Financial Health and Market Reaction Following the Record Heist
Despite the unprecedented scale of the theft, asset outflows remained relatively contained. As of Monday, net outflows amounted to around 3pc of the assets on its platform, Binance said, a relatively modest figure that analysts said suggested customer confidence had largely held up.
To incentivize user retention and restore liquidity confidence, Binance launched a community appreciation campaign on Monday. The initiative offers fee rebates, tiered rewards for users achieving $10,000 in cumulative trading volume, and annual percentage yields on designated products through November 21.

North Korean Hackers Drive Surge in Crypto Theft Losses
The FBI’s attribution of the breach to North Korea-affiliated hackers intensified international focus on Pyongyang’s digital operations. State news agency KCNA quoted Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of leader Kim Jong Un, calling the claim “absurd rhetoric”.
Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis estimated that North Korean actors accounted for 89pc of crypto hack losses in 2026, up sharply from 15pc in 2021. Analysts in Seoul noted that illicit cryptocurrency acquisition serves as a critical financial channel for regime maintenance and weapons development, with South Korea’s central bank estimating North Korea’s gross domestic product at 47.18 trillion won ($35.09bn) in 2025.
Maksym Repa, head of DeFi at Lombard, observed that broader cryptocurrency markets demonstrated resilience, with investors distinguishing between a security failure at a centralized exchange and the underlying network integrity. Meanwhile, Binance confirmed it is undergoing an independent expert review to validate its structural remediations and prevent future system compromises.
