Blerim Dzemaili ends his career
At 37, the FC Zurich midfielder with 69 caps for the Swiss team will hang up his boots at the end of this season.
A symbol of Swiss football is about to bow out. At 37, Blerim Dzemaili has decided to end his rich career at the end of this season.
“After careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that my journey as a professional footballer should end at this stage,” he said in a statement. Over the years, I have experienced many successes and beautiful emotions that will stay with me forever. […] It’s very important for me to thank all the fans who have always carried and supported me over the years. I would also like to thank all the presidents, athletic directors, teammates, officials and coaches who have shaped my career.”
The FC Zurich midfielder began his professional career in 2003, at the club where he is about to retire. During his travels (he played in no less than 10 clubs, from Bolton to Shenzhen via Torino, Parma, Naples, Galatasaray, Genoa, Bologna and Montreal), he won two Italian Cups (with Naples in 2012 and 2014) and achieved the Cup-Championship double at Galatasaray in 2015. Dzemaili was also crowned Swiss champion with FCZ – his favorite club – in 2006, 2007 and 2022 and won the Swiss Cup in 2005.
In addition, he totaled 69 selections and 11 goals for the Swiss team, from 2006 to 2018, with whom he lived three World Cups in 2006 (without having played a single minute), 2014 and 2018 as well as Euro 2016.
