Diablo IV Seasons offer new content, but players are already eagerly awaiting news on the game’s first expansion. In an interview with DexertoRod Fergusson, head of the Diablo franchise at Blizzard, confirmed the annual release of expansions.
Historically, Lord of Destruction has been a great achievement for Diablo II. It was the same with Reaper of Souls for Diablo III. The first expansion thus took the games to a much higher level by not only fixing the problems, but also by adding much appreciated features.
Given the potential of Diablo IV, we can’t wait to see what Blizzard has in store. When Patrick Dane asked what D4’s lifespan would be and Blizzard’s vision for it, here’s Rod Fergusson’s answer.
RF: You know, we talk about years and years. That’s what we focus on. When you look at the launch of the game and this first season, we see it as building a foundation on which we can build the future. So when we look at our quarterly seasons and annual expansions, that’s what we focus on for our live service.
We have projects, we have plots that fit into the future. We have projects. We’re always leapfrogging with seasons and expansions, so it’s something we’re going to be doing for a long time. We are enthusiastic.
When you look back and realize that it was 11 years between D3 and D4, you feel like we fell short of our players, our community, and what they deserve. This is something we are rectifying in D4 with our seasons and expansions.
While it’s not yet clear what Diablo IV’s first expansion will consist of, it’s obviously good news if Blizzard is planning a steady pace for upcoming expansions. We can therefore expect the first expansion to be released in 2024.
That said, from a personal point of view, an annual expansion seems to me to be almost too high a pace, if we are talking about content similar to what we have known in the past: new area, new class, new mechanics, etc.
Blizzard may be able to keep up with this pace by offering lighter but more frequent expansions, which would be a solution to keep players while avoiding huge productions to be released annually.
