Bo Bassett has carved his name into the wrestling history books, capturing the 65-kilogram bracket at the 2026 Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. The freshman phenom from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, has yet to slip on a Virginia Tech singlet, yet he is already making waves as a Hokie by securing the program’s first senior-level world championship.
The triumph also marks a significant milestone for American wrestling, making Bassett the first U.S. athlete to win the 65-kilogram weight class since 2006. Operating out of Blacksburg, the newcomer punched his ticket to the top step of the podium after navigating an undefeated opening day on the international stage.
The Road to the 65-Kilogram Crown
To claim the world title on Friday, October 30, Bassett had to get past Armenia’s Vazgen Tevanyan. The matchup pitted the surging American freshman against an imposing adversary: a world champion, four-time world medalist, and two-time Olympian.

From the opening whistle, Bassett brought his signature relentless pace, using persistent hand fighting to turn himself into a difficult moving target. Tevanyan struck first by earning a step-out point, but that single mark would be the only offense the Armenian star managed against the relentless Hokie freshman. Bassett answered quickly before the first period expired, grabbing a score to edge ahead 2-1.
Braking Away in Astana
The second period belonged entirely to the American. Bassett widened his advantage by executing two successive takedowns to push his lead to 6-1.
Frustration began to mount for the Armenian competitor. Tevanyan was admonished by officials for a wild swing, pushing Bassett’s margin to 7-1. Not content to simply run out the clock, Bassett secured a swing single for insurance, sealing a commanding 9-1 victory and cementing his status as the king of 65-kilograms.
