(Agence Ecofin) – With a booming tourism sector after Covid-19, the civil aviation industry in Morocco is recovering more and more quickly, unlike some other African countries where the pace of recovery is relatively slow .
Air traffic in Moroccan airports increased to 19.4 million passengers at the end of last September, which corresponds to an increase of 35% year-on-year and a performance of +3% compared to the first 9 months of 2019.
In view of the new statistics from the national airports office (ONDA), this overall flow is notably driven by international traffic which totals 17.5 million passengers over the period, i.e. increases of 6% and 37% compared to the figures for 2019 and 2022.
Europe, with nearly 14.7 million travelers registered over the period, constitutes the first destination for most flights handled at airports. It has also strongly stimulated international traffic, contributing up to 84% of international flows. The recovery of this segment is also driven by flights from/to North America which represents a growth rate of 6%, with 512,430 passengers recorded.
Except for Mohammed V airport which displays a mixed performance with a recovery rate of 84% compared to 2019, for a throughput of 6,551,010 passengers, volumes on other airport platforms are growing, particularly in Tetouan airports. , Essaouira or Tangier which achieved respective recovery rates of 459%, 72% and 44% compared to 2019.
This pace of activity, if it is maintained, should allow civil aviation to exceed the 2022 figures which were 20.5 million passengers for all airports. According to forecasts revealed by ONDA, this sector could equal the record of 25 million passengers achieved in 2019 in 2024 and reach a level of around 27.8 million in 2025.
