Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden announced Thursday that she would demand additional resources for police and security during the next budgetary conclave.
She made this choice in response to requests made by the mayor of Anderlecht, Fabrice Cumps, following the deadly shooting which took place in her town last night.
“We must protect our neighborhoods from the brutal violence of organized crime,” Verlinden said in a statement.
“This is why we started two years ago to strengthen the federal judicial police. An additional 310 million euros are invested and 390 additional people are recruited. But you also need high-performance technology and in-depth expertise. This is why we want to invest additional resources in modern equipment and infrastructure,” added the minister.
During the night from Wednesday to Thursday, around 1:10 a.m., a 31-year-old man was shot dead in his car with a weapon – probably a Kalashnikov – in Anderlecht. The man was reportedly hit by 17 bullets and died at the scene. This act could be linked to drug trafficking.
The mayor of Anderlecht, Fabrice Cumps, “insistently requested that there be a strengthening of the resources of the federal judicial police (PJF)”. “Our actions carried out on the ground serve to ensure that the situation does not get worse, but the fight against organized crime is a responsibility of the federal judicial police, whose state of extreme poverty we know ”, he said Thursday during a press conference.
