Borussia Dortmund Finds Early Joy Through Diagonal Balls
Niko Kovac deployed his side in an aggressive posture from the opening whistle. Borussia Dortmund found early joy through Nico Schlotterbeck’s diagonal balls to Julian Ryerson, repeatedly causing problems for the visitors. Ryerson played crosses into the middle in the 3rd, 9th, and 21st minutes, but despite good finishes the ball did not end up in the net.
Betis weathered the initial storm and gradually worked their way into the contest through sustained possession and quick transitions. The visitors even had the ball in the back of the net before the break, only for the linesman’s flag to cut short the celebrations for offside. The complexion shifted just past the half-hour mark when Guirassy was forced off through injury.
Chasing European Momentum Amid Domestic Grinds
Entering the fourth matchday, the two clubs arrived with different European profiles. Real Betis came to North Rhine-Westphalia with a perfect record in the competition, having collected nine points from victories over Lille, Porto, and Feyenoord. Meanwhile, Dortmund stood in mid-table with six points after three matchdays.
Kovac’s men stepped onto the pitch buoyed by a resilient 2-2 draw against FC Bayern München in the Bundesliga, where Fabio Silva secured a dramatic late equalizer in the 89th minute. That result extended the Black-and-Yellows’ unbeaten run across all competitions to five matches. Yet translating that domestic grit into continental progress remained a work in progress against a Betis side noted for its secure ball circulation.
