Elise van der Horst explains emotional reasons for heavy make-up use

Dutch singer Elise van der Horst opened up about the emotional reasons behind her heavy make-up use during television appearances on the reality show Race Across The World, as reported by RTL.

The 44-year-old artist addressed her routine of applying cosmetics before cameras roll, explaining how recent personal struggles left a visible impact on her skin. Following a long day of traveling on the program, Van der Horst removed her make-up in a hotel room and reflected on the physical toll of a challenging chapter in her life.

Elise van der Horst Reflects on Skin Changes and Make-Up

  • The singer acknowledged that recent years brought significant life changes, including unsuccessful pregnancy attempts that impacted her skin.
  • Van der Horst noted that while she is happy with her life, washing her face at night recalls her former clear skin.
  • Co-star Guido Weijers reassured her during the episode, telling the artist that she does not need the cosmetics.

Personal Struggles Behind the Cosmetics

“The past few years were not the easiest years for me,” Van der Horst told viewers after taking off her make-up remover. She detailed a medical and emotional journey that involved multiple attempts to start a family without success. That stressful period altered her skin texture, leaving behind pigmentation marks that prompted her to wear more coverage on television.

For the performer, confronting her bare face remains a private hurdle. “If I’m home and I go out to the park with the dog in the morning, I certainly don’t walk around with a face full of make-up,” she said. “Still, it feels a bit more uncomfortable because I used to have very even skin and now I don’t.”

Van Der Horst Expresses Happiness Despite Visible Reminders

Despite seeing the remnants of those difficult years in the mirror every evening, Van der Horst emphasized her overall contentment. “I’m very happy with my face and I’m very happy with my life, let’s put that first,” she stated. Fellow traveler Guido Weijers offered immediate support during the hotel scene, stating, “I might find you even prettier without make-up than with.”

Episodes of Race Across The World air every Tuesday and Wednesday at 20:30 on RTL 4, with streaming options available on Videoland.
