MONACO – A Botswana athlete facing a three-year doping ban is set to sell his Olympic medal. Nigel Ames, who won silver in the men’s 800m at the 2012 London Olympics, sold his medal to help his family’s financial difficulties.

Botswana’s first Olympic medalist, the Ames Athletics Integrity Unit, was caught up in a doping test last year. After pleading guilty, the 4-year ban was reduced to 3 years. Nigel Ames stated that a team approached him to buy the medal for US$ 3.39 lakh (approximately Rs. 2.8 crore).

But the documentary on the life of Ames is releasing soon on the OTT platform. After that, the value of the medal will increase to 5.58 lakh US dollars.
