Boxing in mourning: Lay Kalenga, who had just relaunched his career, drowned in Charleroi

You were told about a double chilling news item recently: two people drowned in the Charleroi region, during prohibited swimming, this Wednesday a few hours apart in two different places. One was a 19 year old young man, the other the Brussels boxer Lay Kalenga. The body of the latter was fished out Thursday morning, confirms the prosecution, by civil protection divers in the Pircha pond in Gosselies.

On social networks, the world of Brussels boxing was moved by the disappearance of the young man, apparently promising. The Anderlechtois had recently returned to the ring and had just made his second pro fight in June. Nicknamed “Master Lay” and obviously very popular with those who knew him, he had just relaunched his career with the “All Eyez on Brussels VI” gala in the “middleweight” category.

Present with a friend at the Pircha pond, an old open-pit mine, they had decided to swim, despite the prohibitions. According to the testimonies reported by the police, neither of them was perfectly comfortable in the water.
