Brandons de Payerne 2024: Program, Traditions, and New Features

2024-02-10 14:00:00

On Friday February 16 at 5:24 a.m., Payerne will be awakened by the Guggenmusik. Spread across the four corners of the city, the cliques will kick off the Brandons. Over four days, around 60,000 people are expected in the streets of the Broyard city. The program ? It is dense. There will of course be traditions such as the children’s procession on Saturday afternoon which will bring together 1,700 participants. The next day, at 2:24 p.m., it’s time for the big procession made up of 12 floats. The Festival Hall will welcome the John Saintbor orchestra and its 16 artists for evenings tinged with yellow and purple, the two colors of this 129th edition. And who says carnival, says confetti and its big battle Saturday late morning. The organizers ordered three tonnes.

Bringing the festivities back to life in a typical Payerne restaurant

Several new features are being offered this year, for example a shots bar which will replace the wine bar. But what the committee is proud to announce is the creation of an ephemeral replica of the Reine Berthe restaurant, a bistro well known to Payern residents and which closed its doors last year. “A typical Payernais estaminet with dishes like tripe, calf’s head with vinaigrette, black pudding, all in a very special atmosphere with a owner who decorated her restaurant in a magnificent way,” explains Lolo, alias Loris Cornamusaz, communications manager for the Brandons de Payerne. His disappearance left a certain void in the hearts of the city’s residents and revelers. So it’s much more than a blink of an eye. “More and more typical Payerne restaurants have closed in recent years. And they are replaced by others who rather make pizzas or Asian dishes and who do not participate in making the Brandons (…) The participation of these cafe owners is not the same as the old ones. And it was important to us to bring Queen Berthe back to life,” explains Lolo.

Among the highlights, there is the traditional procession of floats. At work for months, the designers, all volunteers, are doubling down on originality to impress the approximately 20,000 people who are expected to attend the show. Tank builders who have almost carte blanche, underlines Loris Cornamusaz. “But they can’t do everything and anything. They have no right to shock people. The procession is there to recall certain regional or international facts. These are humorous winks, but which should not offend.”
