On the 28th of April, Brazil celebrates International Education Day. The date was adopted by the MEC (Ministry of Education) in consideration of the World Education Forum, held in Dakar, Senegal, between April 26 and 28, 2000. The event was attended by leaders from 164 countries, including them Brazil, with the aim of seeking the progress of education around the world.

During the forum, the nations involved committed themselves to advances in the educational field through the so-called “Declaration of Dakar”. Since then, the MEC has made several official publications in which it emphasizes the importance of the date, celebrated next Friday.

For Michelle Pereira Silva – professor of the Pharmacy Attendant course at Cebrac São Gonçalo Alcântara, with a degree in Biological Sciences and a Master’s degree in Applied Sciences to Health Products -, education is a vital process in all societies, being able to contribute to the full training of individuals.

“Therefore, having an Education Day helps to highlight the relevance of the theme and raise awareness among the population about the different challenges present in Education”, he says. And the challenges are many: in the country, more than 1 million children and adolescents aged 4 to 17 are out of school, according to the 2022 Basic Education School Census, which mapped information on 47.4 million students in 178 .3 thousand school units.

For Michele Pereira, the date can help to encourage and make the population aware of the importance of education, whether school, social or family.

“This date [Dia da Educação] it can be marked by testimonials from different subjects involved in the educational process, from different times and contexts of life”, he points out. “Thus, the power that education, whether formal or informal, can exercise in building and transforming lives can become more evident to society as a whole,” she says.

The teacher of the Pharmacy Attendant course at Cebrac São Gonçalo Alcântara draws attention to the fact that vocational courses prepare students to work in the job market and are capable of expanding their boundaries.

“As a teacher at Cebrac, I realize that the vocational course provides knowledge, practices and experiences that bring students closer to different professionals and increase their chances of identifying themselves in a particular profession or area of knowledge”, he explains.

“From a vocational course, students are awakened and envisioned continuing their studies at colleges, as well as investing in microbusinesses, which contributes to the future of the whole country”, he articulates.
