Brazil: Floods leave at least 25 dead – 2024-03-28 15:36:34

Floods and landslides have killed at least 25 people in Brazil following torrential rains forced thousands of residents to evacuate their homes in mountainous areas of the country.

Rescuers rushed to rescue stranded residents in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro as forecasters predicted more rain. Soldiers and firefighters accompanied by specially trained dogs are carrying out search and rescue operations in the affected areas of Brazil with the authorities speaking of a “chaotic situation”.

So far in the state of Espirito Santo, 15 deaths have been recorded from the natural disasters. 13 of them were killed in the city of Mimojo do Sul. More than 270 houses were destroyed according to local authorities, while more than 5,400 people were evacuated from the affected areas.

Among the victims of the bad weather in Rio de Janeiro were four people who lost their lives when a landslide swept through the popular tourist destination of Petropolis, causing the collapse of a house.

According to officials, rescue teams rescued more than 90 people in this Brazilian state.
