A man named as a suspect of carrying out several robberies on busy avenues in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (PE) was arrested after being recognized by a woman who had his Apple Watch stolen thanks to the location of the device, provided by the network Look for (Find My)da Apple.

According to information from the 19th Battalion of the Military Police of Pernambuco, the victim was approached while driving on Avenida Ayrton Senna — Piedade (Jaboatão dos Guararapes), when she was approached by men, who said they were popcorn sellers, and had her Apple Watch taken by one of them.

As the device was linked to the Buscar network, the woman was able to present the approximate location of the device to the police, which pointed to a residence on Avenida Sul (Recife). As they did not have judicial authorization, the officers were unable to investigate the location, but continued to search the surrounding area.

Coincidentally, a man arrived in front of the residence indicated by the location and was approached by the police. Although nothing was found on him, images from previous robberies were used by the police for comparison purposes — which allowed the victim to make due recognition.

Victims of other robberies also recognized both the suspect (who was detained) and his accomplice (who appears in the images). According to the police, they often act as popcorn sellers and rob defenseless victims (usually women).

The negative side of this story is that, at least as of this writing, the victim has not yet recovered his watch. It is possible that he is in one of the residences on Avenida Sul, where the police have not yet obtained legal authorization to carry out a search and seizure warrant.
