O Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region ordered that the Meta Platformsa conglomerate that owns networks such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, suspend the use of the name “Meta” in six other brands recently acquired by the company.

This measure aims to safeguard a previous ruling by the São Paulo Court of Justice, which, a few weeks ago, determined that the technology giant cease using this name in Brazil within 30 days.

Furthermore, the decision responds to the request of the Meta Serviços em Informática S/Aa Brazilian company that obtained registration of its name at the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI) in 2008, following a request originally made in 1996.

Meta Platforms even tried to circumvent the court decision by acquiring brands with similar names, such as “META4”. However, a separate action in the Rio Courts also resulted in the suspension of these parallel registrations.

Telmo Costa, CEO of Meta Serviços em Informática, states that the American giant persists in using the name in Brazil — despite not having the right —, harming his company, which is 34 years old. When contacted, Meta has not yet commented on the decision.
