For Brazil, the group stage at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand means the end of the line. Brazil drew 0-0 with Jamaica to finish third in Group F.

Brazil needed a win in their final group game against Jamaica after losing to France. But the South Americans couldn’t find a recipe against the island state’s defensively well-positioned footballers. After the goalless draw in the game led by the Swiss Esther Staubli, the team around the outgoing icon Marta has to start the early journey home.

Jamaica, on the other hand, reached the round of 16 for the first time with a goal difference of 1-0 in their second World Cup participation. It is the third team, alongside Switzerland and Japan, to not concede a goal in the group stage. The Jamaicans are in second place with five points and will meet the winners of Group H in the round of 16 next Tuesday.

In the parallel game, France defeated Panama 6-3 and secured the group victory. France’s round of 16 opponents will also be determined on Thursday.
