Bremen – Bremen’s red-green-red coalition wants to take action against a supply gap in the case of abortions with a law. The draft provides that the state of Bremen will guarantee abortions both in Bremen and in Bremerhaven in the future. If the law were to be implemented, it would be tantamount to securing the supply at the municipal level. It is a nationwide unique law, said the chairman of the Bremen left fraction, Nelson Janssen, today in the Bremen state parliament.

The federal states are already obliged to ensure a sufficient range of outpatient and inpatient facilities for abortions. There must also be sufficient advice centers. This is regulated in the Pregnancy Conflict Act, a federal law.

The Pregnancy Counseling Act has been in place in Bremen since 2006, which is intended to ensure that there are enough counseling centers. However, there is no separate state law for guaranteeing demolitions.

According to the estimates of the government factions and the advisory center association, such is the case Pro Family necessary. “Women currently have a huge problem getting an appointment at all,” said Lea Pawlik, state manager of Pro Familia Bremen. The situation will get worse, Pawlik said. Bremen could play a pioneering role with the law. “I really hope that many federal states, which are now really in great need, will take the draft law as an example.”

The draft states that there is a shortage of doctors who are still willing to perform abortions. The public hospitals in the state of Bremen are also increasingly less able to do this. Another reason is the lack of staff. According to the left-wing faction, which refers to information from the health department, there were more than 2,200 abortions in the state of Bremen in 2021. © dpa/aerzteblatt.de
