British comedian Russell Brand has denied any criminal wrongdoing after the Sunday Times reported that four women accused him of sexual assault, including rape, over the seven years he was at the height of his fame.
Brand (48 years old), the former husband of American singer Katy Perry, issued a statement denying “very serious criminal allegations” that he did not specify, hours before the newspaper published them online on Saturday.
The Sunday Times did not say whether any of the women had filed a complaint with the police. Archyde.com was unable to reach Brand’s representatives for additional comment after the newspaper’s report was published.
The newspaper, which reported that the alleged incidents occurred between 2006 and 2013, said that one woman had filed a complaint of rape while another said that Brand had assaulted her when she was 16 years old. The newspaper added that two of the four said that the attacks against them occurred in Los Angeles.
In a video posted on social media, Brand said the charges included “a series of very heinous and aggressive attacks as well as some very stupid things.”
“But amid this series of astonishing attacks… there are some very serious allegations that I completely refute,” he added.
He went on to say, “These allegations relate to the time when I was practicing public work, when I appeared in newspapers all the time, as well as in films.”
“My relationships have always been consensual,” he added.
